Faculty of Management International presents: Vappu 2018

VAPPUKUVA_1

May Day (in Finnish: Vappu, also known as Wappu or Wabu) is one of the biggest celebration days in Finland. With origins from both Walburgis Night and International Workers’ Day, Vappu has become an integral part of Finnish student culture. The first of May and the weeks preceding it are definitely the highlight of the year for Finnish students – the courses are almost over, the summer is coming and the weeks are full of parties and other exciting events. As an international student in Tampere, the late April and the Wappu Weeks are the best time to be in the city and enjoy the unique atmosphere!

Some key accessories for proper Vappu celebration:

Balloons, lots of them!

Sima, a type of traditional non-alcoholic (though there often ends up some non-non-alcoholic mixers) mead

Serpentine rolls, confetti-like decorations that you’ll find everywhere after big Vappu parties. There is also an “exploding” version (Paukkuserpentiini) that is so dangerous that the Finnish government has in all its wisdom made it illegal for people under 18 years of age.

Tippaleipä, the delicious funnel cake eaten during Vappu

Ylioppilaslakki, the student cap that all university students and other high school graduates wear in Vappu. Some people say you’re allowed to wear it already in May Day Eve, some people say that only after midnight, anyway on the actual first of May you’ll see the whole city wearing them.

And of course sparkling wine, perfect for Vappu picnic!
